| Un anfibio de la prehistoria. |
Hace millones de años, incluso mucho antes del auge de los poderosos dinosaurios, el mundo fue dominado por los temnospóndilos. Estas criaturas cuadrúpedas se arrastraban en la tierra -algunas con bastante más habilidad que otras- pero sin dudas era el medio acuático (y especialmente los pantanos) el entorno en el que mejor se desempeñaron.
Uno de estos temnospóndilos primitivos fue el Chenoprosopus, un género de estos anfibios que estuvo compuesto por dos especies distintas: Chenoprosopus milleri y Chenoprosopus lewisi, siendo la primera mucho más grande que la segunda. El nombre de este animal proviene del griego, y significa "Ganso de cara corta" (debido a que la base del cráneo se parecía al de un ganso).
Este anfibio existió en lo que ahora es el sur de Estados Unidos, apareciendo a finales del Carbonífero y extinguiéndose a principios del Pérmico. Si bien no se sabe con exactitud el tamaño de esta pequeña bestia, se ha logrado determinar con exactitud que la base de su cráneo del Chenoprosopus lewisi medía apenas unos diez centímetros, sin contar su prolongado y característico hocico con forma de embudo.
