Luego de una temporada 2019 sumamente complicada y tormentosa, Universidad de Chile esperaba empezar de buena forma el Torneo Nacional del presente año. Sin embargo, las cosas no salieron como estaban planificadas, y la escuadra del Chuncho debutó en este campeonato con una derrota por 2-1 ante Huachipato, en un duelo disputado en la ciudad de Talcahuano.
A los 49´la escuadra local se puso en ventaja gracias a una anotación de Ignacio Tapia, sin embargo la "U" logró empatar parcialmente por medio de un penal obra de Joaquín Larrivey (75´). Sin embargo, el balde de agua fría llegaría en el minuto 94, cuando Joffre Escobar pusiera el 2-1 definitivo para el local, demoliendo todas las ilusiones del Romántico Viajero, que parece no haber cambiado el chip de la compleja temporada anterior.
